If you want to make Lisa Gentry smile,

One of her happiest childhood memories is of
doing exactly that. She was raised in

she and other children lived and were cared

Being the
world's fastest Crocheter can open a few
doors.
It has for Chatham's Lisa Gentry, who is
recognized by Guinness Worlds Records as the
fastest Crocheter. The German-born fast
finger expert turned the title into a
marketing and design contract with Coats &
Clark that takes her around the country,
put-ting her designs in various national
magazines.
According to the company's web-site, Coats
& Clark is America's No. 1 name in sewing
and needlecraft products and offers a full
range of products for sewing, quilting,
knitting, crochet and machine and hand
embroidery.
"My designs are actually coming out,"
Gentry said. "It just takes awhile.
The sooner I get
more designs out, the more people will start
knowing me."
Gentry owes part of her burgeoning design
fame to her husband of 10 years, Jerry.
"My husband always told everybody I was fast
with my fingers," she said. "Then when I was
checking the Internet, I read something
about the world's fastest Crocheter and how
many stitches she did. What I ended up
reading was not the world record holder but
the American record holder. After three
times trying it at home, I beat her record.
That is when I decided to go for the
Guinness Worlds Records."
Gentry received her Guinness recognition by
crocheting 5,113 stitches in 30 minutes
during a sanctioned showcase in Monroe on
June 25, 2005.
The previous record had stood since 1981.
Gentry even faced a one-on-one challenge
from Lily Chin, a fast and famous Crocheter
in her own right. The result was a televised
match in front of numerous California
television stations that recorded Gentry
crocheting 107 stitches to Chin's 82
stitches.
The ensuing crochet fame has Gentry in
Oakland this week for a convention, teaching
crochet classes for three days. In July, she
will go to Philadelphia for more crochet
classes and a fashion show.
Lisa and Jerry were also in Detroit
earlier this year filming television spots.
Locally, the
town of Chatham and Mayor Herman Leonard
presented Gentry with a plaque honoring her
Guinness standing during this month's city
council meeting.
Lisa and Jerry met in Maryland and have been
married for ten years. They moved to the
Caney Lake area three years ago.
"I met my husband in Maryland and we lived
there for seven years," Lisa said. "He is
actually from Bastrop and he decided to move
back home."

folks probably won't be tying-one-on later tonight.
Although they'll tie plenty off... here's Wayne
